From the Chief Executive Officer

Imagine a group of health workers in a small village in Uganda, sitting in a classroom, listening to one of Johns Hopkins’ foremost experts on AIDS explain the fine points of HIV treatment and prevention. This picture becomes even more interesting when you realize the AIDS specialists haven’t left the Hopkins campus. Instead, they are communicating via state-of-the-art video-conferencing technology.

Ed MillerJohns Hopkins Medicine has created this new paradigm for health care through its Center for Clinical Global Health Education. I believe this Center holds the promise of dramatically improving health care in resource-limited nations.

Today, HIV, TB and malaria are rampant in the very places with the fewest well-trained health care workers. It’s a recipe for disaster. By setting up virtual classrooms in these nations, establishing close personal exchanges between our specialists and their health care workers, putting current medical information within easy reach and consultations with experienced clinicians a computer click away, our new Center will export Hopkins’ expertise in delivering clinical care. I believe we can save millions of lives.

Through this new resource and under the leadership of Robert Bollinger, M.D., M.P.H., an internationally recognized Infectious Disease specialist, Johns Hopkins will build on existing relationships throughout the world, including India, Thailand, UgandaEthiopia, South Africa and the Democratic Republic of the Congo and then teach important treatment skills to physicians, nurses, pharmacists and paramedical workers in their own setting. The result will be improved ongoing medical care for these patients.

The Center for Clinical Global Health Education’s vision falls squarely in line with Hopkins tradition -- to educate through healing and to heal through education. With your help, we can share the fruits of this tradition with the developing world.
